"Domestic relations" is an umbrella term that includes many different legal issues related to family/domestic situations. Some aspects of domestic relations law are described below.

A "qualified domestic relation order" (QDRO) is a legal order given following a marital separation or divorce. It changes the ownership of asset or pension plans, authorizing a divorced spouse to become an "alternate payee," typically as a means of providing financial support in the wake of divorce.

Domestic violence (officially known as "family violence" in Texas) occurs when any member of a household commits an act of violence against another, or threatens to do so in a way that places the victim in immediate danger. Domestic violence allegations are taken extremely seriously, and if you become involved in one, it is critical to have a qualified attorney representing your interests.

A restraining order (or "protective order") is issued by a judge and intended to prevent domestic violence. When a restraining order is issued, the offending party is forbidden from directly or indirectly harassing or threatening the victim. If a child is protected by a restraining order, the offender is not allowed to go near the child's school or day-care facility.
